Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
