An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
